The Spring & Summer Dresses – One and Done!

The Spring & Summer Dresses – One and Done!

Warmer weather will get here soon…I know it will. That is what keeps me going in these long stretches of cold. Plus the sun is taking longer to set….Yay! Winning!

With the nicer weather comes events… Weddings, baby showers, and work events — all the celebrations that fill the calendar and bring us together with friends, family, and coworkers.

With the season approaching, it is time to think ahead and prepare for all the events that will demand your attention (and your wardrobe). Rather than scrambling to find the perfect outfit for each occasion, why not plan ahead and invest in versatile pieces that will make this season easier for you? Wouldn’t that be nice?

1. Start with a Versatile Dress

The key to a stress-free season is selecting a dress that is as versatile as it is stylish. Look for a dress that you can wear for more than one occasion. The best pieces are often simple, yet elegant, with room to dress them up or down depending on the event.

The thing I love about style right now is that all dress lengths are relatively easy to find and in style. Short (above or at the knee), midi (just below the knee) and maxi (ankle length) is back for a dramatic option. Pick the one that suits you best. If you love your legs and want to show them off, go short! If you love the sway of a maxi, go long.

You can’t go wrong with a black dress, even in Spring and Summer season.  I know some people think that black is boring or just too…you know…BLACK. But if it’s what makes you feel the most comfortable and you know you will feel appropriate wearing it, then it doesn’t matter what other people think. If you want to make the dress feel different then look for special features in the dress like cutouts (done in the right way), dropped tail or a strong A line silhouette.

We have a great dress in stock right now from I Love Taylor Madison that comes in bright blue, but I brought it in black too. It’s the styling of the dress that makes it stand out. It has these simple cut outs in the body that are both fun and subtle. Plus, this dress is long so it has some drama. This is sure to be a favourite this season.

Look for summer dresses that are versatile and can also be party dresses, wedding guest dresses, work clothes, or even dressed up and accessorized to become more formal dresses!

2. Plan for Different Events and Accessorize

While your dress might be the same, the key to making it feel fresh every time is by changing how you accessorize and style it. Here are three ways to dress up your dress for different events:

Office event: Add a fitted blazer, kitten heel and simple silver jewelry.

Baby shower:  Add a colourful cardigan, metallic ballet flat and statement earrings.

Concert with friends: Add a jean jacket, your favourite baseball hat, fun sneakers and a classic hoop earrings.

3. Don’t Forget the Essentials: Plan for Comfort

While style is important, comfort should never be overlooked. With all the events you will be attending, you'll want to ensure your dress and accessories allow you to enjoy the event.

Choose fabrics that you love wearing and are comfortable. Cotton is great, but not always dressy enough. Linen is a summer “go to” but some don’t like the wrinkles. Polyester is great for being wrinkle resistant, but some women don’t like the feel. Just keep fabrics in mind.

Also, don’t forget under garments for this time of year, like skin tone underwear that won’t show under finer fabrics.

Bike shorts are great for wearing under dresses to avoid chafing and unexpected gusts of wind. Maybe you need a new bra because the dress you bought will show traditional bra straps. Don’t leave these seemingly little things to the last minute.

Whether you're going to be wearing your new spring or summer dress to a wedding, a cocktail party, work, the difference between a decent outfit and a fabulous, remarkable, head-turning, "Wow!" one is in the details like these.

Plan ahead so your only job that day is to have FUN!

I have ladies coming in all the time who say, “I have an event tonight and I am not sure what to wear. I left this to the last minute!”

Don’t be her.

Don’t get me wrong; I love her. I will always help her. But I have seen as well that woman leave the store frustrated and defeated. I have been ‘that’ woman too. So help me, help you. Let’s get ready together.
